“My coach, Mujeeb Rahman, has been superb as a critical friend to the business. He has helped me to focus on the important issues facing me as a director of a high growth company." Ben Lundie, Director PEP
Pure Energy Professionals and its group companies are technical, commercial and financial advisors in the renewable energy sector.
Ben Lundie is a director of PEP. His professional training was as a corporate lawyer specialising in energy projects. Ben has been with PEP for 3 years.
PEP has a long-standing relationship with Richard Reed, one of the Grow Cornwall business coaches. Richard invited Ben to hear about the Coaching for High Growth programme by attending Oxford Innovation’s Wonderland launch event at the Caerhayes Estate in October 2009.
PEP’s formal engagement with Oxford Innovation started in February 2010.
PEP’s business approach is to create and grow new businesses with partners by acting as the management team and participating in equity growth.
The challenges that PEP faced were threefold:
• How to best use their existing resources and skills to create and grow new businesses whilst servicing existing clients
• How to evaluate and rank new opportunities
• How to brand and market the business
The PEP team has also benefited in a number of ways from the coaching programme. As well as coaching support for Ben, the business has received support in rebranding and developing a marketing strategy, and help in shaping the company team.
Ben says of the support that he has received: “My coach, Mujeeb Rahman, has been superb as a critical friend to the business. He has helped me to focus on the important issues facing me as a director of a high growth company. The discipline of regular meetings has helped me to look critically at the overall business and its future.
In addition, Mike Jobson has been involved in helping us shape our branding and marketing strategy and trained, Belbin Practioner, Martin Smith, provided insight into the strengths of our team and facilitated work around the staff Belbin profiles.”
PEP doubled their group turnover in 2010, taking it to £1million. Recently the group has been recruiting new team members – creating new, high value jobs in Cornwall.
The business has rebranded and has recently undertaken a market review which is in the process of being implemented.
Ben comments” We are in detailed negotiations with investors to create 2 new high growth businesses in 2011, targeting Q2 2011 to complete the transactions. It is hoped that both of these businesses will create and safeguard employment in Cornwall.”
